Gull Lake Country Club

Gull Lake Country Club traces its origins to John A. Scott, a Classics professor at Northwestern University, who envisioned a golf course on the hills above Gull Lake. He persuaded his Gull Lake neighbor, Kalamazoo businessman James H. Dewing, to underwrite the project.

Scott soon located the land he wanted, including most of the club's current frontage along Gull Lake, and acquired it from John Kellogg, a retired farmer. The property covered roughly ninety-six acres of long-rested farmland, at the time heavily overgrown with brush, weeds and tangled undergrowth.
