Manistee Golf & Country Club
About Manistee Golf & Country Club
Manistee Golf & Country Club traces its origins to the turn of the twentieth century, when the land it occupies was the Canfield Farm on the edge of town. The idea for a club reportedly took shape in December 1898, when a group of local businessmen — Frank Canfield, Edward Buckley and Robert Babcock among them — travelled south by private rail car for an annual hunting trip and discussed building golf links on Canfield's property.

At the time Manistee was riding the end of a remarkable boom built on lumber and the later discovery of salt, ranking among Michigan's larger cities. The course itself was laid out by Scottish-born architect Thomas Bendelow, who planned a nine-hole layout measuring 2,765 yards, with construction beginning soon after the ground was staked.
