About Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club
Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club traces its origins to 1918, when John Kelsey, founder of the Kelsey Wheel Co. and a summer resident of the island who was fond of golf, joined with associates in planning an 18-hole course there. The group assembled 290 acres in the middle of the island, and the club was incorporated in 1919 under charter directors C. S. (Cap) Vaughn, Yellot Hardcastle, Thomas Stevens, Charles Hastings, T. Y. Leonard, Earl Roberts and Thomas Winter.

Architect Donald Ross was brought in to lay out and build the course, with William Connellan serving as general superintendent and funding advanced by Kelsey. Work took two years: 12,000 yards of cinders were blended with 4,000 yards of sand and 4,000 yards of loam and spread over the site so turf could be established. The result was the only fully irrigated course, fairways and greens alike, in the area during the 1920s, and the third in the United States with watered fairways.
