About Treetops Golf Club

Treetops traces its origins to the Sylvan Knob Ski Area, opened in 1954 by Ouelette "Lin" Meade with two tow ropes and six slopes, selling its first lift tickets in 1955. Al Wieland, who returned from World War II to work at the ski school and earned certification as a professional ski instructor, remained until 1982, when the hill passed to physician and ski instructor Dr. Michael Samalik. A 2006 ski run, "Al's Bypass," was named in Wieland's honor.

Meade sold the property in 1983 to Harry Melling of Melling Tool Company, who set about turning it into a full resort, adding the 40-room Sylvan Inn, the Haus Lounge and further lodging totaling 140 rooms. Melling then brought in golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. to design the resort's first golf course, establishing the northern Michigan destination as a golf as well as skiing property.
