Gaylord Country Club's opening stretch sets the tone for a course where approach play matters. The first hole is a dogleg left that climbs slightly to a well-bunkered green sloping from left to right.
The second is a driver hole, with a wide fairway flanked by bunkers on either side. The third plays as a par four leaving roughly a 160-yard second shot into a large green; front pin positions sit between two sizable traps, leaving little margin. Greens throughout the layout tend to be tricky, putting a premium on leaving approach shots on the correct side.
