About Charlevoix Golf Club
Charlevoix Golf Club was founded in 1896 by John P. Wilson, a Chicago attorney who joined the Chicago Club in 1883, and Edward C. Waller, also of Chicago. The layout was drawn up by Scottish-born architect Willie Watson, who came to the United States in the late 1800s to help spread the game and worked on numerous course designs across the country. The club counts among the earliest regulation golf courses in the United States.

The original nine holes sat west of Mercer Boulevard and measured 2,645 yards. A 1899 railroad brochure promoting two summer tournaments described the ground as largely level, with sandy soil under light sod and few difficulties for the average player. In January 1900, members of the Chicago Club bought more than 100 additional acres, and the course had grown to 18 holes by 1903. A new watering system followed in September 1908.
