The Mackinaw Club Golf Course sits on land in Carp Lake whose documented history reaches back to the turn of the twentieth century. The course itself was built by the Carter family together with golf architect Jerry Matthews.
Before golf arrived, the property served several purposes. It began as a family farm, and a remnant apple orchard from that era still borders the fourth fairway. During the 1940s the land functioned as an emergency landing strip for B-25 bombers, which were conducting World War II practice bombing runs over one of the islands in Lake Huron.
