Beaver Island Golf Course traces its origins to 1957, when ground was broken on farmland once worked by "Big" Tom McDonough. The layout was planned by Matt Melville, a former golf professional who had first come to northern Michigan on a golfing trip to Charlevoix with politician Adlai Stevenson to play the Belvedere course, then known as an elite club. Melville later visited Beaver Island while serving as boatswain aboard the ore carrier Wilford Sykes.
Persuaded by a group of Islanders that a course would help draw more summer visitors, Melville contributed the design and golfing knowledge, while local residents Gary McDonough and Pete "the Swede" supplied the early labor that brought the course into being.
