Atlantic Pines Golf Club at Old Marsh

Atlantic Pines Golf Club at Old Marsh in Wells, Maine, draws on the classic template-hole tradition associated with Macdonald and Raynor, with several holes built around those long-established design ideas.

Strategy comes largely from the bunkering and the contours. One driving hole asks players to find a line between fairway bunkers while avoiding a deep greenside bunker on the left, though a kick-slope hidden short and right of the putting surface can feed approaches in. The course's Redan hole grew out of the existing landform at the green, with a putting surface that pitches away from the incoming shot, making the distance to the front edge important. The longest of the holes rewards a strong drive followed by a demanding approach, offsetting its length with a large green left fully open in front.
