About Castine Golf Club
Castine Golf Club traces its golfing roots back to at least 1896, when records from the Bates-Tenney family home on Battle Avenue noted local golfers employing a caddie. The oldest known image of golf in the town, a Bates family photograph dated 1899, shows the Madockawando links with part of Fort George in view.
In its earliest form the course was little more than open ground, crossing the private land of several owners by permission, with houses standing along the first fairway and in the adjoining fields. The opening tee sat on the ramparts of Fort George, requiring a drive over the Backshore Road.

In September 1921, the Scottish-born architect Willie Park Jr., then 58, arrived in Castine to lay out a new course for the club. The largely treeless terrain may have recalled the links land of his homeland, and his plans reshaped the informal playing ground into a designed golf course.
