Belgrade Lakes Golf Club
About Belgrade Lakes Golf Club
Belgrade Lakes Golf Club grew out of Harold Alfond's wish to build a golf course in this rugged lakes region of central Maine, conceived as a relaxed and unpretentious place he described as a country club for the average guy. He turned to British architect Clive Clark, who shared that outlook.
The design was routed to follow the existing landform, with as little earth moved as possible. Spread across roughly 240 acres of mountaintop terrain, the layout features rolling fairways framed by stands of timber and white granite outcroppings. The par threes play through scenic ground, the par fours vary considerably from hole to hole, and the par fives are short but demanding, with old-style cross bunkering appearing throughout the round.

Alfond was drawn to golf from boyhood, when one of his earliest jobs was caddying at a club in his hometown of Swampscott, Massachusetts, during the Great Depression.
