Gunpowder Golf Course sits on Old Gunpowder Road near Laurel and is the oldest golf course in Prince George's County. Its layout follows the natural streams and valleys of the property, drawn in a Scottish style that leaves players working across a mix of hills and low-lying ground.
The name reflects local history. During the Revolutionary War era, gunpowder produced at the Adelphi Mill was carried along Powder Mill Road to Gunpowder Road and onward to Fort McHenry, a route that gave the area its road names. The course also nods to the old Scottish tale in which parliament moved against golf for distracting men from archery practice, only for the arrival of gunpowder to provide a new means of defense and, in turn, spare the game.
