About National Golf Club
National Golf Club in Fort Washington, Maryland, was designed by golf course architect Ted Robinson Sr.
Robinson earned master's degrees in landscape architecture and land planning from the University of Southern California in 1948, then worked as a land planner and taught at the university. Early projects included parks, subdivisions and roadways, and his attention gradually turned to golf course design and how courses fit within surrounding land uses. By the early 1960s golf architecture had become his main work, and it remained his focus for the rest of his career. He described the central challenge of design as balancing the game's strategic elements so that the greatest number of players are rewarded, favoring courses that stay enjoyable and varied from day to day.
