About Bethesda Country Club
Bethesda Country Club occupies a site in Bethesda, Maryland, with a history that reaches back to 1913, when the Montgomery Country Club acquired the original farmland. The farmhouse on the property was adapted into a clubhouse, and because no road yet reached the grounds, members arrived by a trolley run by the Washington and Great Falls Railway and Power Company, whose tracks followed what is today Bradley Boulevard.

In 1929 the property became the National Women's Country Club, whose membership included first ladies, social figures and dignitaries. Fifty-five Dutch elms were planted along the approach road, known as International Memorial Lane, to honor women members from 55 countries; the trees that survived Dutch elm disease remain, joined by stands of maples.
The Bethesda Country Club Corporation bought the 156-acre property from the Washington Aviation Country Club in 1947. At the time it held a clubhouse, two tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course, and the club began with 81 members.
