About Taconic Golf Club
Taconic Golf Club occupies ground in Williamstown that was once woodland and later cattle pasture. In prehistoric times the area was a glacial lake bed, leaving a nearly impermeable clay base topped by a deep layer of loam — soil conditions that help sustain the club's fairways, greens and rough.
The club traces its beginnings to 1896, when William Howard Doughty, James M. Ide and Edward C. Gale were granted permission by Williams College to sink three tomato cans in Weston Athletic Field, which borders what is now the 18th fairway. Henry N. Sabin and James Bullock joined them that summer, and a payment from Gale to Sabin in September 1896 formally launched the Taconic Golf Club. A seven-hole layout followed within weeks.

In 1927 George Alfred Cluett, Williams Class of 1896, set out to build a proper course for the college. Land gifts from Mrs. Doughty (about 47 acres) and John H. Dennison (a 45-acre farm near the present clubhouse), plus a 17-acre parcel purchased by the college trustees, completed the property. A history of the club was compiled by John English, a 1932 Williams graduate and former USGA official.
