About Whitinsville Golf Club
Whitinsville Golf Club sits in the Blackstone Valley, roughly 45 miles west of downtown Boston, and plays as a nine-hole course designed by Donald Ross in the mid-1920s. It was established in 1925 on ground that had been part of the Whitinsville Cotton Mill Farm, and was originally built for executives of the Whitins machine works, then the largest maker of textile machinery in the world. The club was organized to encourage outdoor recreation, chiefly golf and tennis.

The site was chosen in part because all but two of the nine holes can be seen from a single vantage point, and the course runs along the banks of the Mumford River, giving it an open, scenic character. Ross had free rein to route the holes across the rolling ground, and the resulting valley layout uses a variety of natural features. Ross himself is said to have regarded the course as among his strongest work, and he singled out the ninth as an exceptional two-shot finishing hole.
