About Country Club of New Bedford
The Country Club of New Bedford traces its origins to the late nineteenth century, when golf in the city grew alongside its shifting economy. The present course is a Willie Park Jr. design.
The city's first course was laid out in 1897 by Boston professional William Campbell on the Hawthorn farm, then at the edge of town. It was a short, flat nine-hole links, and the Hawthorn Club was formally incorporated in 1898. The site occupied what is now New Bedford's West End, bordered by Hawthorn, Allen and Brigham streets, with woodland forming the fourth boundary where Rockdale Avenue later ran.

As textiles overtook whaling as the city's leading industry around 1900, the club found its nine holes crowded by a rapidly growing membership. Board members drawn from the new industrial economy set out to find a larger site, leading in time to the club's present home.
