Cape Ann Golf Club in Essex, Massachusetts, is the only public course on Cape Ann. It opened in 1931 to a design by Eugene "Skip" Wogan, then the golf professional at Essex Country Club and a protégé of architect Donald Ross. The course sits on a site overlooking the salt marsh along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway (Route 133), and has been owned and operated by the Stavros family, who have carried out improvements over the decades.
George Stavros built the clubhouse in the 1980s and began excavating an irrigation pond beside the ninth fairway; an irrigation system drawing from that pond was installed in 1999.
Author John Updike played here on occasion and referenced the course in his writing, including stories in Golf Dreams, one of which describes the fourth and seventh holes.
