Amesbury Golf and Country Club traces its origins to 1922, when Bill Gowen and a group of local businessmen bought the 110-acre Smith Farm on Monroe Street. Wayne Stiles laid out the nine-hole course, which was ready for play by 1924. It first operated as Powder House Hill Country Club, a name borrowed from the structure on a nearby hilltop that held shot and gunpowder during the War of 1812, though the title was used for only a year.
The club remained member owned until 1960, when the Mellon family purchased it and opened it to public play; the family still owns and runs the course.
The sixth hole is tied to local literary history: its hillside spring and the outlook from the top of the hill are said to have prompted John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "The Fountain."
