False River Golf & Country Club traces its origins to 1962, when a group of Pointe Coupee residents set out to build a gathering place for golf and fellowship. A temporary board guided the effort before the club was formally incorporated, and treasurer Leo Mougeot acquired the abandoned farmland chosen as its site on behalf of the founding members.
The original clubhouse was designed by club member and architect Major Hebert, while Brad Lancaster served as design engineer for the original nine-hole golf course. Apart from the clubhouse, pool and other buildings, nearly all of the course work was carried out by volunteer labor from the membership, making the project a community undertaking from the start. More than six decades later, the club remains a long-standing fixture of the surrounding Pointe Coupee community.
