Stearns Golf Course sits in Stearns, a former coal company town in southeastern Kentucky. The original layout was a nine-hole course laid out in the early 20th century, in a part of the state where golf courses were uncommon because of the rugged terrain and the shortage of level ground.
The property covers roughly 180 acres, with the golf course itself occupying about 49 acres alongside a clubhouse and swimming pool. The log clubhouse was built in 1936 with funding from the Works Progress Administration, and the kidney-shaped in-ground pool also dates to the 1930s, one of a limited number of WPA-built pools in the country.
The site has been documented for its historical significance in connection with the coal company towns of eastern Kentucky, as an example of a mining company bringing a feature of urban leisure to a remote industrial setting.
