Middlesboro Country Club
About Middlesboro Country Club
Middlesboro Country Club traces its origins to the founding of Middlesboro, Kentucky, a city laid out in the late 1880s in the Yellow Creek Valley by Scottish-born Canadian Alexander Alan Arthur and his British backers in the American Association Ltd., who were drawn to the region by iron ore deposits in the Cumberland Mountains and acquired some 80,000 acres of land.
The precise opening year of the golf course is uncertain, though play has been confirmed as early as 1889, making it the longest continuously played course in the United States and the second oldest in the country. It has carried several names over time, beginning as the Kentucky Golf Club, later the Middlesboro Golf Club, and now the Country Club of Middlesboro.

In its earliest years the club had no clubhouse. The original first tee stood at what is today the corner of 25th Street and Worcester Avenue, running west toward Cirencester Avenue and on to holes still in play. During the 1920s the course shifted westward as residential development expanded.
