Sterling Country Club is a nine-hole golf course set west of Sterling, Kansas, on land that was originally a cow pasture leased from local farmer and teacher John Dill.
The course dates to the early 1960s, when a group of Sterling men organized plans for a local club. The layout was routed by Dr. Kenneth Smith, Sterling College academic dean, a longtime golfer and former college golf coach, who walked the field to set out the nine holes. The golf club held its first annual meeting in 1964, when members adopted a constitution and elected a board of directors. Frank Dill served as charter president, Ora Shields as vice-president and Dick Wyatt as secretary-treasurer, with Kenneth Smith, Gleeman Long, Bob Fulton, Charles Gilmore and Maurice Schmitt also serving on the board.
