Built in 1979 and designed by Mel Anderson, The Orchards is a nine-hole executive course that originally served as an auxiliary layout to Alvamar Country Club, now The Jayhawk Club. In the latter half of 2018, the course underwent a comprehensive renovation aimed at improving the greens and enlarging the tee boxes to add length.
Measuring 1,943 yards, the course plays shorter than most but asks for accuracy. Narrow, tree-lined fairways thread past creeks and thick rough, and approaches finish at small, tucked greens that can be difficult to read, making for a test suited to a range of skill levels.
The course sits in central Lawrence along Bob Billings Parkway, within walking distance of the University of Kansas campus and easy to reach for visitors from out of town.
