Martinsville Golf Club
About Martinsville Golf Club
Martinsville Golf Club traces its origins to the town's mineral-water boom. In 1887, Sylvanus Barnard struck artesian mineral water while drilling for oil on his land, and belief in its healing powers drew visitors seeking relief from ailments such as rheumatism, stomach complaints and skin conditions. Barnard opened Martinsville's first sanitarium in 1888, and a dozen more resorts followed between 1890 and 1930.
Walter A. Kennedy, who owned two of the town's sanitariums, saw golf as a fitting attraction for his guests. He engaged Indiana golf architect Bill Diddle to lay out a nine-hole course, which opened in 1925 as the Martinsville Country Club.
