About Bull Valley Golf Club
Bull Valley Golf Club occupies roughly 500 acres of McHenry County land that retains traces of an older Illinois landscape, much of which elsewhere was turned over to farming by early settlers. The property's terrain was shaped by the last glacial advance some 10,000 years ago, and the site of the 12th tee sits atop a terminal moraine rising 1,010 feet — said to be the highest ground between Lake Michigan to the east and the Mississippi River to the west. Before settlement, the hill served as a natural lookout for Mesquaki and Potawatomi travelers.

The surrounding land was ceded to the U.S. government in 1833 and quickly claimed by homesteaders. Farmer and dairyman James G. Dufield received a letter of patent for 240 acres in 1841, signed by President John Tyler, and others such as Issac Torbert and Abraham Bondine McConnell followed. These families worked the prairie flatlands for grain and grazing, with local dairymen making cheese for the Chicago market some sixty miles to the southeast.
