About Wilmette Golf Club
Wilmette Golf Club occupies land north of Lake Avenue that was once the Peter M. Hoffman dairy farm, a property served in the late 19th century by horse-drawn delivery trucks traveling dirt roads shaded by oak trees. In 1922 three men purchased the acreage, bordered on the east by the Skokie Valley branch of the North Western Freight line, and converted it into a public golf course. Originally called Playmore Golf Club, it measured 6,515 yards and promoted a pay-as-you-play policy. Many of the farm's old oaks were left standing along the fairways.

The layout was designed by Joseph Roseman, one of the three original owners and a groundskeeper and inventor. Roseman is credited with developing the hollow roller mower to protect turf during mowing, and he adapted a Model-T Ford to pull gang mowers, changing course maintenance practice. He was also among the first to install underground irrigation on the courses he built.
