Oak Brook Golf Club was established in 1972 by Wilbur and Larry Suhre, and has been part of the Edwardsville and greater St. Louis golf scene ever since. Wilbur, a lifelong entrepreneur whose ventures ranged from a grocery store to propane and banking, came to golf later in life, while his son Larry played on the first Edwardsville High School golf team and competed professionally during the 1960s. Looking for a place where Larry could practice and play, Wilbur acquired overlooked land on the edge of town, and the family cleared trees and moved earth by hand to shape it into a playable course. Family friend Harold Patton suggested the Oak Brook name.
The East Nine, finished in 1972, was the original opening nine and now plays as holes 19-27. Lined with mature oaks, it is a quiet, tree-framed stretch that rewards accuracy more than distance. Built on floodplain ground, it has been the subject of ongoing drainage and conditioning work.
