About Belmont Golf Club
Belmont Golf Club occupies a site with a notable place in American golf history. In 1892 Charles Blair Macdonald convinced thirty of his Chicago Club colleagues to each put in ten dollars toward building a nine-hole course here, on a sixty-acre stock farm owned by A. Haddow Smith, a Lanarkshire golfer who had emigrated from Musselburgh, Scotland in 1890 and offered his land for the project. With no regulation cups to be had, tin cups were used instead.

Play began in the late spring of 1892, making it the first golf course in America west of the Allegheny range. After that first season Macdonald persuaded the Chicago Golf Club membership to add nine more holes, and in 1893 the site became home to the first 18-hole course in the United States. The club, chartered by the State of Illinois that same year, was one of the five founding members of the USGA.
