Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club
About Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club
Designed by Robert L. Jordan, the golf course at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club opened in 1965. The layout plays across rolling terrain with elevated tees and is framed by a series of lakes, with a clubhouse on site for rounds and group outings.
The property sits on land formerly mined by the Traux-Traer Coal Company, which worked sites in several Illinois counties as well as Minnesota and Saskatchewan. Land belonging to Glenn Traux, son of company head Harold Traux, became Wee-Ma-Tuk Country Club in 1956. In the following decade Putt Creek was dammed to form Lake Wee-Ma-Tuk, while the many smaller former strip mines filled with rainwater to become ponds, and the surrounding ground was divided into lots. The name Wee-Ma-Tuk translates as Land of Many Lakes, and the streets were named by Margie Traux after Native American tribes and literary references.
