About Charleston Country Club
Charleston Country Club traces its origins to 1911, when it was founded as the Coles Country Club with 75 members drawn from both Charleston and Mattoon. In 1923 that membership divided, with each town going on to establish its own club.
The club's grounds carry a longer history still. The site sat along the interurban electric car line running west of Charleston, where Urban Park once drew families to a dance pavilion, bowling alleys, swings, a merry-go-round, ball grounds, an artificial lake for boating and bathing, and even a small menagerie housing foxes, raccoons, bears and monkeys. When the interurban line ceased operating in 1927, the park closed and the property passed to the Charleston Country Club.
