Governors Run Golf Course sits between creek tributaries of the Kaskaskia River in Carlyle, Illinois, with holes that cross bridges and streams and thread through stands of trees. Ground was broken in October 1992, when Illinois governor Jim Edgar landed a helicopter on what became the first green to take part in the ceremony, turning the surrounding fields and creeks into a golf facility.
Architect Don Horrell used the varied terrain to give each nine its own character. The front nine plays over open ground marked by native prairie grasses and lakes, encouraging a wider, more forgiving style of play. The back nine moves through woodland, over creeks and around water, placing more emphasis on accuracy and shot making.
Five sets of tees on every hole allow the course to be set up at a manageable length, though breezes off nearby Lake Carlyle can add considerable difficulty.
