Makray Memorial Golf Club

Makray Memorial Golf Club traces its origins to Thunderbird Golf Course, opened in 1962 by Paul Makray Sr., who wanted a welcoming, family-oriented place to play that did not require membership. In 2002, nearly ten years after his death, his family undertook a renovation of both the course and clubhouse, and the club reopened three years later under its current name.

The clubhouse carries a collection of historic architectural details. Its light fixtures date from 1798 through the 1930s, many originally gas-burning before being converted to electricity, while copper corridor lights were salvaged from the 1920 New York subway. Iron gates in the Golf Shoppe and Grille came from the Old Burnt Tavern in Kentucky, and the corridor walls feature a custom two-tone faux finish by Painted Illusions of Lexington, Kentucky.
