Red Carpet Golf Course
About Red Carpet Golf Course
Red Carpet Golf Course in Waterloo opened for play in the summer of 1920, marking the arrival of modern-era golf in the area. The layout was designed by Tom Bendelow, a prominent architect of the period whose other work includes Medinah Country Club, Olympia Fields and Hyperion Field Club in Johnston, Iowa.
The course has a long competitive history. Walter Hagen, winner of 11 professional majors, made his second appearance there in 1933, the same year that Gene Sarazen, then the reigning U.S. and British Open champion, stopped to play the course.
Red Carpet has been under private ownership since 1976. It sits about a mile east of US Highway 63, on Newell Street in Waterloo.
