Oakland-Riverside Golf Course

Oakland-Riverside Golf Course is a public course in Oakland, Iowa, serving the Riverside-area communities of Oakland, Carson and Macedonia along with golfers from across southwest Iowa. It operated for decades as the private Oakland Country Club before converting to public play.

The course traces its beginnings to 1959, when a group of local civic leaders purchased land from the Frank J. Eckles Estate with the aim of building a golf course for the town's present and future. The original backers each contributed $1,000 toward construction and personally guaranteed a bank mortgage to cover the remaining costs. In the early years, with no nearby water source, those founders planted trees and hauled buckets of water by hand to the far corners of the property to keep the new trees, greens and tee boxes alive.
