About Fairfield Golf & Country Club
Fairfield Golf & Country Club traces its origins to one of the earliest introductions of golf to the area. In the spring of 1892, Dr. James Frederic Clarke was returning home from a medical meeting in Philadelphia when he stopped in Chicago and noticed golf clubs displayed in a State Street shop window. Having recently read an article about the game, he bought a wooden driver and three balls to bring the sport back to his hometown.

Once in Fairfield, Clarke and his nephew, Charles C. Sampson, melted the tops off seven empty tomato cans so they could be sunk into the ground as makeshift holes. After office hours, the two newcomers to the game set out with the club, the balls and the tin cans to play.
The club remains a long-standing social and recreational gathering place in the community.
