Cedarcrest Golf & Country Club sits among the rolling farmland of southeast Iowa, in Columbus Junction. The course was built on land that was once a family farm, and many of the hardwood trees and native pines that shaded the property in earlier years still stand on the grounds today.
Work began in the early 1960s, with much of the excavation, green construction and planting carried out by community volunteers. Local farmers, business owners, electricians and plumbers contributed labor and equipment toward both the course and the clubhouse. Cedarcrest opened in 1962, and in its early days members gathered for "weeding" parties, hand-pulling small weeds from the greens as a shared maintenance effort.
