About Princeville at Hanalei
Princeville at Hanalei sits on Kauaʻi's North Shore, in a setting shaped by the lush Hanalei Valley, where Hawaiians cultivated irrigated taro fields and fished the nearby ocean long before Captain James Cook reached the island in 1778.
The surrounding land carries a deep ranching history. Cattle arrived on Kauaʻi's North Shore in 1831, making the district one of Hawaiʻi's earliest ranching areas, and early settlers also trialed crops such as coffee and silkworms. As herds expanded, King Kamehameha III brought Spanish vaqueros to the islands to teach horsemanship and cattle handling, helping establish the paniolo traditions still associated with Princeville.

The name itself dates to 1860, when Robert Crichton Wyllie, a Scot who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Hawaiian Kingdom, named the sugar plantation he had acquired near Hanalei in 1853 after a visit by the young son of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma.
