Kukuiolono Park & Golf Course sits on a high plateau along the south coast of Kaua'i, above Kalaheo, and is reached through gates on Papalina Road. The nine-hole, par-36 layout occupies land that was once the home of Walter D. McBryde and is now a public park known for its scenery.
The property's history runs back to Elizabeth Moley McBryde, a widow with six young children who built the large Wahiawa Ranch, the foundation of McBryde Sugar Company and later Kaua'i Coffee Company; the park's entrance gates were given by her son in her memory after her death in 1926. Walter McBryde managed Kaua'i Pineapple Company from its organization in 1906 until his death in 1930 and served in the Territorial Legislature and on the Kaua'i Board of Supervisors.
He placed his 346 acres in an irrevocable trust as a recreation area open to the public, and left funds for its upkeep. The community building and pro shop, dedicated in 1972, was built with money from the McBryde Trust.
