About Glen Arven Country Club

Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville, Georgia traces its history back more than 130 years, to an era when the town drew Northern families as a winter retreat for its mild climate, pine woods and quail-hunting plantations. The club was established in 1888 by J. Wyman Jones together with Charles Merrill Chapin, Howard Melville Hanna, John F. Archbold and John Hay "Jock" Whitney, on a 300-acre tract first bought by Jones.

Golf arrived in 1892 with nine basic holes and sand greens. In 1929 architects Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek rebuilt the property as an 18-hole course, and in 2013 Bob Cupp carried out a restoration aimed at returning the layout to its classic character.

Member Coburn Haskell invented the Haskell golf ball here. The club has hosted the Piney Woods Amateur since 1919, and in the 1930s and 1940s staged a PGA Tour event whose fields included Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson.
