About Savannah Country Club
Savannah Country Club traces its origins to the early 1920s, when cotton broker Henry C. Walthour bought several hundred acres on Wilmington Island with plans for an upscale community anchored by the General Oglethorpe Hotel. Golf was part of the project from the start, and the course was laid out by Donald Ross, the architect behind Pinehurst in North Carolina.
The hotel's fortunes faded after the 1929 stock market crash, but the golf course endured through repeated changes of ownership between 1935 and 1965, drawing players even during stretches when the hotel itself was shuttered.

In 1965 Savannah realtor and developer William Lattimore acquired the property and commissioned architect William C. Byrd for a substantial renovation that added underground irrigation along with canals, lakes and ponds. The resort later operated as the Savannah Inn and Country Club and then a Sheraton; after the hotel closed, the course became a separate club with a full-service clubhouse, pool and tennis courts.
