About Atlanta Country Club - Private Country Club
Atlanta Country Club is a private club in Marietta, Georgia, founded in 1964 by Atlanta business leader Jim Clay and opened in 1966. Clay's aim was to build a championship-caliber course and bring a PGA Tour event to the city. From 1967 the club hosted the Atlanta Classic annually for three decades, with one exception: in 1974 it staged the inaugural Tournament Players Championship, won by Jack Nicklaus.

The club has also held significant amateur championships, among them the USGA Senior Amateur in 1968 and the USGA Women's Amateur in 1971.
The course was originally designed by Willard C. Byrd and laid out alongside historic Sope Creek, where the ruins of a Confederate-era paper mill still stand. Those Civil War remnants can be seen from the 13th, the course's signature hole.
