About Green Island Country Club

Green Island Country Club is a private club set within the Green Island Hills area of Columbus, Georgia. Its 18-hole course was designed by architect George Cobb of Greenville, South Carolina, who served for many years as a consulting architect at Augusta National. Construction began in 1960 under the direction of Gardiner Garrard, Sr., who oversaw the early planning and the infrastructure work needed to open up the surrounding land, and took two years to complete. The club opened in 1962.

G. Gunby Jordan played a central role in developing both the neighborhood and the club, including its arrival on the professional tour schedule. The Green Island Open joined the tour in 1970 and was renamed the Southern Open the following year; the event later moved to Callaway Gardens in 1991. During its run at Green Island, players including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Columbus native Larry Mize competed on the course.
