Rocky Point Golf Course
About Rocky Point Golf Course
Rocky Point Golf Course traces its origins to 1911, when the Tampa Automobile Club opened it as one of Florida's earliest golf courses. It operated for 31 years before the federal government closed it in 1942, following the United States' entry into World War II, and built barracks on the grounds to house prisoners of war.
In 1953 the property was transferred to the City of Tampa for one dollar, and the city leased it to J.S. "Curly" Hurtman for 25 years. He and his wife, Merle, reopened the course in 1954, with Merle taking over its operation after his death in 1957.

When the lease ended in 1978, the city handed management to the Tampa Sports Authority, a special district established in 1965 to plan and maintain sports and recreation facilities in the Tampa Bay area. The authority continues to run Rocky Point today, alongside Babe Zaharias Golf Course, Rogers Park Golf Course and Raymond James Stadium.
