Babe Zaharias Golf Course
About Babe Zaharias Golf Course
Babe Zaharias Golf Course in northwest Tampa dates to 1926, when it opened as the Forest Hills Golf and Country Club. The early course was bordered by just ten homes, with riding stables on the south side of the property and a two-story clubhouse that contained a ballroom.
In 1949 the course was bought by Mildred Ella "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias, who played regularly there, often alongside the Men's Club, and ran clinics and exhibitions for area golfers. She is said to have lived on the clubhouse's second floor for a time. After her death from cancer in September 1956, the course closed and fell into disrepair, and the abandoned clubhouse burned down in 1962.

The City of Tampa took over the property, retained Babe's name and reopened the course in 1974 under the management of the Tampa Sports Authority, a special district formed in 1965 to develop sports and recreation facilities in the Tampa Bay area and which still operates the course today.
