The St. Andrews Club traces its origins to a group of seven businessmen—six Canadians and one American—who set out to create a private seaside retreat in South Florida. The founders' backgrounds ranged from service with the Royal Canadian Air Force to thoroughbred racing and a contribution to Canada's 1948 Olympic ice hockey gold medal.
In 1972 the group acquired 28 acres beside the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray Beach, incorporated the club and began building its clubhouse and residences. The name reflects both the founders' attachment to golf and the St. Andrews Links in Scotland, and St. Andrews College in Toronto, which several of them had attended.
