About Pinecrest Golf Club
Pinecrest Golf Club traces its origins to 1926, when architect Donald Ross came to Avon Park to supervise construction of his design, then known as Pinecrest Lakes Golf Course. Ross routed the holes along the natural contours of the land, using the lake and wooded stretches of the property while keeping earthmoving to a minimum, work carried out with horses at the time.
In its early decades the course and its accompanying hotel drew winter visitors from the Midwest, particularly Chicago, and the guest register included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Burns and Allen, Grover Cleveland and Franklin D. Roosevelt, with longstanding local lore placing Al Capone at the resort as well.

In the late 1950s Pinecrest hosted the World Championship of Golf, a professional event whose field featured Sam Snead, Gardner Dickinson and Don January, and which was won by Cary Middlecoff.
