About Newark Country Club
Newark Country Club dates to 1921, when an 18-hole layout was designed by Winfred Reid, a golf course designer who had served as Assistant Head Professional to Donald Ross at the Wilmington Country Club. Membership grew quickly and the front nine opened first, with construction of the back nine deliberately held back until demand required it.
In January 1957 an electrical fire destroyed the club's original clubhouse, a converted barn, along with the pro shop and 176 sets of clubs. Temporary quarters served the membership until a new clubhouse opened in the summer of 1958, and that building remains in use. The course and clubhouse have both seen substantial improvements over the decades, among them the addition of a swimming pool.

Family tradition runs through the club's history, with successive generations of members serving as directors, golf professionals and committee members, and some current members tracing their ties to its earliest years.
