About Country Club of Waterbury
Golf took hold in Waterbury in the 1890s, with the earliest recorded matches played in the spring of 1896 at the West End Golf Links on the east bank of the Naugatuck River. That original nine-hole course was laid out by Waterbury native Arthur Fenn and drew a steady following among both men and women. The Waterbury Golf Association formed in 1899 and, within a decade, grew into the Country Club of Waterbury.

The club incorporated in early 1907, and its founding members began planning a course on 200 acres of pasture at the western edge of the city. In 1927, architect Donald Ross — a Scottish immigrant who had arrived in America in 1899 — was engaged to design the full 18-hole layout, using a mix of the existing property and newly acquired land.
