About Norfolk Country Club Inc
Set in Norfolk, the town with the highest elevation in Connecticut, the club traces its origins to the early 1900s, when the village became a summer retreat for affluent New Yorkers. A short train ride from the city offered an alternative to the Adirondacks, and the area's wooded landscape, lakes and ponds, along with musical performances at the Stoeckel estate and Village Hall, drew a seasonal colony that built large homes and an active social scene.

In 1912 a committee was formed to establish a country club as a central gathering place for social and sporting life. The new Country Club of Norfolk leased the former gymnasium on Maple Avenue — designed in 1892 by Henry Rutgers Marshall for the use of local residents and by then little used — and converted it into a clubhouse with views toward Haystack Mountain. Early club life included dinner dances, concerts, plays and lectures, plus two tennis courts facing Maple Avenue.
